Violet Root Rot Potato Disease


Violet Root Rot (Helicobasidium purpureum), is caused by a soil borne fungus which develops in the field during growing seasons.  It’s often found in carrots and parsnips, but can also affect potato crops.

Common Signs and Symptoms of Violet Root Rot

Violet root rot is usually characterised by a dark, purple coloured rot on the root’s surface, normally starting near the top of the root and spreading upwards.

Common Causes and Conditions of Violet Root Rot

The fungus lives in the soil, spreading from plant to plant, and can survive in the soil for over 4 years.  The fungus is dispersed by rain and irrigation water, and can particularly fields which are on slopes.

Vulnerable / Immune Varieties

There are no particular potato varieties which have a high resistance or vulnerability to violet root rot.

Controlling Violet Root Rot

Cultural and Methods:

Avoid infected areas and ensure tools are kept clean and free of infection.  Ensuring good draining and plant nutrition can also help control violet root rot.
