Purple Eyed Seedling seed potatoes are said to have originated over twenty years ago in the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
This latest version is a very pretty oval-shaped potato with bright patches of purple - rather like Kestrel but with pale yellow flesh.
Purple Eyed Seedling potatoes have been used on no less than six occasions to win the British Potato Championship before It became so infected with virus that he could no longer produce large enough tubers for exhibition use. It was then placed into the SASA potato bank and cleaned of all virus before this new strain could be released.
